North State Grocery operates 22 grocery stores in Northern California and Oregon under the Holiday Market and Sav·Mor Foods brands. Holiday Market is a high-end community grocery store chain. And, the Sav·Mor Foods chain is a low-price grocery store leader.

The Challenge

The essential challenge North State Grocery faced was that their implementation of Dayforce was, in the words of chief financial officer Michel LeClerc, “just not functioning right.” They were at the end of the customer service period, but they still needed help.

“We acquired the Dayforce platform to streamline our payroll, time-keeping, attendance, and benefits processes,” shares Michel. “When Dayforce is working properly, things are great. When it’s not working properly, you end up spinning your wheels. For instance, our benefits module was so poorly configured that we couldn’t do open enrollment with it. We had to go back and manually adjust everything.”

Still, Michel wasn’t ready to give up on the HCM platform. They just wanted it to work the way it should. “We had a huge laundry list of problems that frustrated us. We just couldn’t trust our system because we never knew when the next hammer was going to fall,” says Michel. “So, we began looking for a consultant to help us get the results we expected when we started using Dayforce. That’s when we reached out to Seequelle.”

The first thing that the Seequelle team did was to evaluate North State Grocery’s experience with Dayforce. “They interviewed all of our power-users to discover how they were using the platform,” says Michel. “Not only were they interested in how we used Dayforce, but they also wanted to know how we wanted to be using it and how we wanted to streamline things.”

Getting the modules functioning correctly was one of the primary objectives. Additionally, Seequelle came up with a list of recommendations that would optimize North State Grocery’s processes. “We listened to their recommendations and agreed that they were valuable propositions,” explains Michel. “So, we decided to move forward to implement those recommendations.”

Re-engineered benefit plans

Seequelle helped with the restructuring of the existing benefit plans within the HCM platform to allow for more efficient management and oversight of employee benefit transactions and a more effective enrollment end-user experience.

Improved regulatory compliance

After discovering an issue with labor law compliance, Seequelle recommended the introduction of additional punch validation to eliminate exposure to meal and break compliance laws in California.

Automated rate progression policies

Seequelle helped automate North State Grocery’s employee base rate progression policy to reduce manual effort associated with its administration. This automation provides employees with visibility into how they are tracking toward their next pay increase.

Provided valuable insight

Based on an understanding of how North State Grocery was using the HCM platform, Seequelle provided insight into additional product modules that represented a good fit for their organization. This insight focused on the streamlining of recruitment and onboarding processes as well as employee performance management policies.
